Louvre Windows and Cross-Flow: Old Tech That Works

Long before anyone was running a dehumidifier or fitting a bathroom exhaust fan, Northern Rivers builders were solving the same humidity problem with a bank of glass louvres and a floor plan designed to let air move straight through the house. It’s unfashionable technology by current standards, cheap, mechanical, entirely passive, but it remains one of the more effective tools available for keeping a subtropical building dry, provided it’s actually allowed to do its job. A great deal of the mould found in older Northern Rivers homes traces back to louvres and cross-flow paths that used to work and no longer do.

What Cross-Flow Ventilation Is Actually Doing

Cross-flow ventilation relies on a simple physical principle: air moves from a higher-pressure zone to a lower-pressure one, and if a building has openings on opposing or adjacent faces, wind pressure on the windward side pushes air in, and lower pressure on the leeward side pulls it through and out. Done properly, this creates continuous air movement through a room without any mechanical assistance, which does two useful things for mould prevention. It keeps the relative humidity of the air inside a room closer to the (generally lower) outdoor daytime humidity rather than allowing moisture to build up in a closed, still space, and it keeps surfaces, walls, floors, the underside of furniture, exposed to moving air rather than sitting in the kind of stagnant micro-climate mould spores need to establish.

Louvre windows are the tool that makes cross-flow ventilation adjustable. A bank of louvre blades can be angled fully open on a still, humid day to maximise airflow, angled to let air through while keeping rain out during a squall, or closed tight against a cold southerly. That adjustability is the entire point, a fixed window can only be open or shut, but a louvre window lets a household tune the ventilation to the actual conditions outside, several times a day if needed.

Why This Is Genuinely Well-Suited to This Climate

The Northern Rivers doesn’t have a dry season in the way that inland or southern Australian climates do. Relative humidity along the coast and through the hinterland regularly sits above 70 percent for extended stretches, and even the cooler months rarely drop it into genuinely dry territory. In a climate like this, passive design that keeps air moving is not a nostalgic architectural preference, it’s a legitimately effective strategy, and it’s the reason louvre windows and cross-flow floor plans became the dominant residential design across the region for the best part of a century, well before air conditioning was affordable or common. Where the Old Design Gets Undone

Almost none of the mould problems in louvre-equipped homes are a failure of the original design. They are, overwhelmingly, a consequence of things that have happened to the building since.

Louvres painted shut. This is by far the most common failure point. Decades of repainting without disassembling the louvre mechanism gradually seals the blades together and to the frame. From outside, the window still looks like a louvre window. In practice, it hasn’t opened in years, and the room behind it has lost its adjustable ventilation entirely.

Replacement with fixed or sliding glass. Louvre windows have a reputation, not entirely undeserved, for being draughty and for offering less security than a locked sliding window. Many Northern Rivers homes have had original louvre banks replaced with fixed glass or aluminium sliders during renovations, which solves the draught and security concerns but removes the tunable cross-ventilation the room was designed around. If only one wall of a room is upgraded this way while the opposing wall keeps its louvres, the cross-flow path is broken even though ventilation still nominally exists on one side.

Furniture and curtains blocking the airflow path. A louvre bank that still opens freely can still be neutralised by a wardrobe pushed against it, block-out curtains that are never drawn back, or built-in joinery added during a later renovation that wasn’t designed with the original airflow path in mind.

One-sided cross-flow. Cross-flow ventilation needs openings on more than one face of a room or building. Additions and extensions sometimes enclose what used to be an opposing external wall, leaving the original louvres in place but with nothing on the other side to pull air through. The louvres open, but there’s no longer a through-path, so very little actually moves.

Corroded or seized tracks. Louvre hardware, particularly on coastal properties exposed to salt air, can seize structurally rather than through paint. Blades that are difficult to turn tend to get left in whatever position is easiest, usually closed.

What This Means for Mould Risk

Rooms that have lost their cross-flow path behave very differently to rooms where it’s intact, even in the same house, in the same climate. A bedroom with disabled louvres and no opposing opening will run measurably higher humidity and slower surface drying than the room next door where the original airflow still works, and that difference shows up in exactly the places you’d expect: mould on wardrobe backs, on window reveals, in ceiling corners, and along external wall surfaces where moist air has nowhere to go. Subfloor spaces follow the same logic on a larger scale, elevated homes depend on cross-ventilation under the floor as much as through the living areas, and subfloor vents blocked on one side of the building produce the same stagnant-air problem at a larger scale.

This is also why a room-by-room assessment matters more than a single humidity reading for the whole house. Two rooms with identical exposure to the climate can have very different mould risk depending purely on whether their original cross-flow path is still functional.

Restoring or Replicating the Airflow

For homes that still have their original louvres, the first and cheapest step is usually mechanical: freeing blades that have been painted or corroded shut, replacing perished rubber seals, and confirming the mechanism actually operates through its full range rather than just cracking open a few degrees. Where louvres have been permanently replaced with fixed glass, replicating the airflow generally means either reinstating an openable window on that face, or accepting that the room now needs active help, an exhaust fan, a dehumidifier, or ceiling fans to keep air moving across surfaces, since the original passive strategy is no longer available.

Where furniture or later additions are blocking a path that otherwise still works, the fix can be as simple as rearranging a room, or as involved as reassessing a floor plan that was significantly altered from its original layout. In every case, the goal is the same one the original builders had: air that keeps moving rather than air that sits still. When to Get a Professional Look

If a room in an older Northern Rivers home has a musty smell, recurring surface mould, or condensation on windows that other rooms in the same house don’t have, and the louvres in that room don’t open freely or a renovation has closed off the opposing wall, that pattern is worth assessing properly rather than guessing at. A professional inspection can confirm whether ventilation loss is driving elevated moisture readings in that room, and whether mould is already established in the wall cavity, window reveal, or subfloor below it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are louvre windows actually better than modern sliding windows for mould prevention?

For humidity management specifically, yes, provided they’re maintained and used. A functioning louvre bank gives finer control over ventilation than a sliding window, generally either fully open or fully shut. The trade-off is security and draught performance, which is why many homes have replaced them. The benefit only applies if the louvres are actually opened regularly, one that’s never adjusted performs no better than a sealed window.

Can I just get my old louvres repainted and working again myself?

Freeing and repainting louvre mechanisms is a reasonable DIY task for many homeowners, provided you’re comfortable disassembling the blades from the frame rather than painting over the whole unit as one piece. If the frame or blades are corroded or cracked, a window specialist is a better call than forcing it.

My house still has all its original louvres. Does that mean I don’t need to worry about mould?

Not automatically. Louvres that are painted shut, blocked by furniture, or facing a wall since enclosed by an extension provide little practical benefit even though they’re technically original. Cross-flow depends on the whole airflow path being intact, not just the presence of louvre windows.

Does adding louvres to a modern extension actually help with mould?

It can, provided the extension’s layout genuinely allows air to move through rather than into a dead-end space. Adding a louvre bank to one wall of an enclosed room with no opposing opening won’t achieve meaningful cross-flow.
